LAKELAND | The undefeated Santa Fe Crimson Hawks dedicated Friday night's Sunshine State Athletic Conference showdown against Windermere Prep to the memory of former Santa Fe student and football player Gil Kromer.

And what better way to honor him than to put his number on the scoreboard.

Kromer, who died last Oct. 11 of bacterial meningitis, wore No. 52. And the Crimson Hawks defeated Windermere Prep, the defending conference champion, by the score of 52-0.

“It feels like it's supposed to be that way,” Santa Fe Catholic coach Billy Dickerson said.

The win pushes Santa Fe Catholic's record to 4-0. The Crimson Hawks lead the SSAC's Bay Division and have now outscored their opponents 162-9 in those four wins.

The Crimson Hawks scored quickly and in a number of different ways. Quarterback Walker Richards' first three passes of the night went for touchdowns of 56, 75 and 86 yards to Tyree Rodman, Kenard King and Henry Perry IV.

Rodman also added a 70-yard punt return and a 30-yard touchdown run, Richards' ran 7 yards for a touchdown, King had a 51-yard TD run and Perry returned an interception 80 yards for a score.

“We can score on special teams, defense, offense. Either way, we're going to put up points,” said Rodman.

Richards' first two touchdown passes came on Santa Fe's second and third plays from scrimmage within the first three-minutes of the game. By midway through the first quarter, it was 20-0. It was 26-0 by the end of the quarter, and the game went to a running clock with 4:49 left in the first half when Santa Fe extended its lead to 40-0.

“I think it's important for us to come out and jump on teams,” Richards said. “We have a lot of guys that go both ways. They threw the hurry-up offense at us and we had a lot of guys who got pretty tired pretty fast.”

For the night, Richards completed 5-of-6 passes for 264 yards and three TDs. Damario Vanover carried nine times for 114 yards. Perry had two catches for 124 yards in addition to his 80-yard interception return.

Windermere Prep actually controlled the ball most of the night, running 66 plays from scrimmage to Santa Fe Catholic's 25, but the Crimson Hawks totaled 471 yards on those 25 plays (18.8 yards per play) while the Crimson Hawks' defense held the Lakers to 231 yards (3.5 yards per play).

Although they only ran 25 plays from scrimmage, seven went for 30 yards or more and two others for at least 21 yards.

“We had a really good week of practice,” Dickerson said. “Those guys (Windermere Prep) are the real deal. We have ultimate respect for Windermere's ability, but our guys came with their A game. I couldn't be more proud.”

The Crimson Hawks are off next week.
