WINTER GARDEN Two crosstown rivals will meet on the gridiron for the first time Friday when Legacy Charter and Foundation Academy lineup for a preseason contest at Walker Field in Winter Garden.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and Legacy will be the home team on the scoreboard, although the city-owned facility is utilized by both programs for home games.

For Legacy, which competes in the independent Sunshine State Athletic Conference, the contest against Foundation will be a tough test against a regional finalist in Class 2A last fall.

Coach Jarrett Wiggers hopes that it is a similar challenge to when the Eagles played Deltona’s Trinity Christian in the preseason in 2015, setting the stage for a strong Week One performance in a 20-0 win over CFCA.

“We felt like playing that high a level of competition really helped set the tone for Week One (last year),” Wiggers said. “We know the challenge that we have with Foundation, but it’s exciting to have an opportunity to play a crosstown team.”

Wiggers and his counterpart for the Lions, coach Brad Lord, will have different challenges so far as personnel.

Legacy is looking to carry roughly 25 players on its roster into the regular season, while Foundation’s final roster figures to be closer to 50 — meaning it will take some effort for Lord to get all of his kids in the game.

“We expect to play a lot of younger kids in that game,” Lord said. “We still want to evaluate during that game.”
