Despite the loss of all-everything quarterback Fred Billy, the Saint Stephen’s football team is getting healthier and more reinforcements are on their way to make another run at a title.

Senior Michael Burch, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound linebacker is expected to make his season debut Friday. A starter as a freshman, Burch was diagnosed with an enlarged heart that appeared to derail his football career during his sophomore season.

Earlier this season, Saint Stephen’s coach Tod Creneti floated the idea of getting Burch in for one ceremonial play during the season. However, after being cleared by his cardiologist, Burch is healthy and can return to full-time activities. He will be facing Out-of-Door Academy this week in his first game back.

Burch even carried the flag and led the team onto the field Friday night before the homecoming game against St. Petersburg Keswick Christian.

The Falcons also have been bolstered by the emergence of junior identical twins Chase and Sydney Brown from Canada. Eligible to play Week 3, they have provided a spark and depth, not only on the field but also in the locker room.

“They are both very talented kids,” Creneti said. “They are good players and great kids who have blended in well.”

Linebacker/kicker Alex Virgilio also returned to his normal position on the field, wearing a (Falcons green) protective covering on his hand. Virgilio was limited to kicking duties before Friday’s game but was in on tackles early and made his presence felt in the middle of the defense.

Billy, the team’s leading passer and rusher, missed Friday’s game with a hand injury. Freshman Camden “Cam” Vining led the team to a 48-0 victory without completing a pass while attempting only one. All 305 yards came on the ground.

Billy is expected to return this week. But if he is not ready, Creneti does not want to rush him back for fear of reinjuring his hand.

The Falcons are 2-0 in the Coral Bay Conference of the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. They have conference games remaining Friday at Out-of-Door and Oct. 14 at home against St. Petersburg Shorecrest Prep, which has won its only conference game.

Saint Stephen’s reached the SSAC title game last year, falling to Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic, which handed the Falcons their only two losses of the season.

With more help on the way, they might be poised to make another run.

“Hopefully, we can get all of these things out of the way early,” Creneti said.
