If St. Edward's coach Bill Motta had an extra hand, he could use it to count the number of players on his football team.

But even with only 15 players on the roster, Motta’s gotten the most out of them and has lead St. Edward’s deep into the Sunshine State Athletic Conference playoffs.

The Pirates take the next step 7 p.m. Saturday as they host Windermere Prep in the SSAC Coastal League Final.

The winner moves on to the SSAC title game against the winner of the Coral League final between St. Stephens Episcopal and Seven Rivers Christian.

Saturday’s matchup is a rematch between the Pirates and the Lakers, who defeated St. Edward’s 36-32 on Sept. 23.

“There’s not going to be a lot of secrets out there,” Motta said. “We did everything we could do. They were the better team on the field that night.”

St. Edward’s (6-3) defense will be tested by Windermere’s offense.

The Lakers (10-0) average 46 points per game and have a dynamic running back in Ismael Cortes. The junior has been nearly unstoppable this season. He’s averaging 8.7 yards per carry has rushed for 1,282 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Quarterback Kai Patterson is no slouch, either. He’s thrown 26 touchdowns and only one interception.

“They have a pretty advanced offense and it’s probably progressed a little bit over the last several weeks,” Motta said. “They are probably going to spread it out a little more and throw it.”

St. Edward’s offense isn’t as flashy, but the Pirates average 38.1 points per game.

The Pirates use a running back rotation led by Brian Minella and Daniel Walsh. Minellla has rushed for 744 yards and 12 touchdowns, and Walsh has chipped in with 434 yards and six touchdowns.

Quarterback CJ Hadnot executes the offense.

“Our boys play hard and play for four quarters,” Motta said. “We’re not a bells-and-whistles team. We’re a fundamental team. We want to beat you by blocking and tackling better than you and not making mistakes.”

St. Edward’s won the SSAC title in 2010, Motta’s first year. On paper, it looks like the Pirates are a longshot to beat undefeated Windermere.

However, Motta believes his team has one big advantage.

“We’ve been tested several times and beaten a few times,” he said. “We know what we’re getting into, and we fight for four quarters. We anticipate having a four-quarter football game.”
